Rawai is Phuket's laid-back southern neighbourhood, popular with long-stay expats, digital nomads, and travellers who prefer authenticity over tourist crowds. The Rawai beachfront is a working fishing pier rather than a swimming beach, but that is exactly the charm. Fresh seafood markets line the waterfront, and a scooter opens up the incredible coastline just minutes away.

From Rawai, you have quick access to some of Phuket's finest spots. Nai Harn Beach is a five-minute ride south. Cape Promthep, the island's most famous sunset viewpoint, is ten minutes away. The quiet coves of Yanui Beach and Ao Sane are hidden between Rawai and Nai Harn. Head east along Viset Road to reach Laem Ka Beach, a locals-only gem with calm shallow water and barely a tourist in sight.

Rawai has developed a thriving expat community over the past decade, and the area around Saiyuan Road is packed with international restaurants, cafes, CrossFit gyms, yoga studios, and coworking spaces. This makes it popular with digital nomads who base themselves here for months at a time. The Rawai Boxing Stadium hosts Muay Thai fights several nights a week. The monthly Rawai Vegan Market has become a destination event.

The seafood experience at Rawai beachfront is legendary. The process is simple: walk along the stalls at the fishing pier, choose your fresh catch (prawns, crab, lobster, fish, squid), negotiate a price, then carry it across the road to one of the beachfront restaurants where they will cook it for a small fee. It is some of the best and most affordable seafood in Phuket.

Rawai is also the jumping-off point for longtail boats to Coral Island (Koh Hae) and Racha Island. Ride your scooter to the pier, park up, and take a day trip. The pier area has secure motorbike parking. Boat trips to Coral Island start from around 300 THB return, and the island has beautiful snorkelling and calm beaches.

Skoot has several verified shops in the Rawai area with scooters from 150 THB/day. The roads here are flat and easy, making it one of the most pleasant areas in Phuket for scooter riding. Viset Road, the main artery through Rawai, is a wide and well-maintained two-lane road with little traffic outside of the morning and evening school run hours.

For longer explorations, Rawai connects easily to Chalong to the north (10 minutes), Phuket Town (20 minutes via Chao Fa East Road), and Kata Beach (15 minutes via the inland route). The southern coastal loop through Nai Harn, Yanui, Windmill Viewpoint, and Cape Promthep is one of the best short scooter rides on the island and takes about 30 minutes round trip from Rawai.
